[counting] is it possible - - the clock must be wrong. i could not have possibly slept through an entire day and night. perhaps something has happened to the sun. i can see very little. still foggy, cold, no noise. it cannot be 12 noon. the spirit, but that was a dream. a nightmare. a bad vision from a bad day. but what if, jacob marley - - it cannot be so. it cannot be true. are you the spirit that's coming to talk to me? >> i am. >> what are you. >> you know what i am silly man. i am the ghost of christmas past. your past. >>. [indiscernible] >> take heed, rise and walk with me. >> but spirit, my room is warm and it's late and past my bedtime. look what i am wearing. are they suitable attire for travel. >> take but a touch of my hand here and you will be safe. do you know this place? >> i know it well. i was born in this place. i was a boy here. there are thousands, each one brings back 1000 memories. spirit, lead me where you will. >> do you remember the way? >> i can walk it blindfolded. there's william and johnny. hi johnny! >> look further scrooge, school is almost deserted except for one child. >> i know spirit. the forgotten self that i used to be. >> poor child, why were you alone? >> i was always alone. my mother died during my childbirth and my father blamed me. he hated me. couldn't stand the sight of me. he sent me to that school. there were no letters, no visits. christmas day was a harbor. i was alone with the schoolmaster and he beat me. he taught me obedience and he played his games - - i'm sorry. never mind. thank you.
