http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12507/7190850?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Tue, 28 Nov 2017 04:20:06 +0000 Protecting Yourself from Porch Pirates keeping your Christmas packages away from a Grinch http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12507/7190850?cpt=8&wpid=2637 KTVE monday! some call them 'porch pirates'... thieves who steal right from your front door (gordon) but as more of us buy more on-line. ways to catch the crooks are evolving too. here's nbc 10 morning anchor connor ingalls with a special report. jeff armstrong is a coin collector. jeff armstrong, victim :02 "this particular package had something valuable." like many nowadays, he does most of his hunting online. jeff armstrong, victim :02 "it was a rare mercury dime." but after a recent delivery to his west monroe home... jeff wasn't feeling the usual excitement that comes when he opens the door to his latest find. jeff armstrong, victim :03 "you know anger...what are you doing?" before he could get to his haul, someone else hauled off with it. jeff armstrong, victim :06 "some kids i guess had seen them drop off the package and were following behind them, and picked it up and took off running." luckily jeff was home at the time and able to catch up to the thieves. he still couldn't believe what had happened. jeff armstrong, victim :11 "this is my stuff not yours, what are you doing taking stuff that's not yours. it's just not something i wouldn't have thought growing up people would actually do." unfortunately, the trend is growing... with cases being reported across the country. and many aren't as fortunate as jeff when they get hit by what some call - "porch pirates." connor ingalls, reporting :09 "but if you want to protect the packages that come to your home, there are new options like this security camera you see me on now to keep your deliveries safe." connor ingalls, reporting :04 "and one of the cool things is, you can control it all right here on your smart phone" clint cox, owner a-1 key & lock :01 "it's real basic." clint cox is the owner at west monroe's a-1 key and lock. while security cams aren't exactly groundbreaking technology, the constant accessibilty is what's changing the game. clint cox, owner a-1 key & lock :04 "we can see them from your smart phone, so you're able to view them when you're away from your house." companies like arlo and nest are offering apps connected to their cameras... so you're always just a swipe away from seeing what's going on at home. clint cox, owner a-1 key & lock :05 "they can check on their family or their kids when they get off the bus when they're away from their house, or at work." clint cox, owner a-1 key & lock :03 "so they really make it a lot more secure for the family." and when it comes to package thieves... clint can't tell you the number of times one of the newer models he sells has sunk a 'porch pirates' ship. clint cox, owner a-1 key & lock :11 "there has been quite a few that we've had where customers had someone break into the home or business, and they were able to catch the suspects based off the system and the camera." if someone tries anything tricky at jeff's home now, they're looking at a similar fate. jeff armstrong, victim :04 "since that time my wife and i installed security cameras at our house." and with access always at his finger tips... jeff armstrong, victim :02 "i actually have an app now..." jeff armstrong, victim :02 "we can actually see who's at the front door." jeff armstrong, victim :02 "i can actually talk to them and see them through the app." he's not worried about feeling that sudden anger and disbelief any time soon... jeff armstrong, victim :10 "you just feel better kind of in the back of your mind now knowing that, if this ever happens again i'll have some sort of proof or evidence to show police and find out who it was." a peace of mind he says, doesn't have a price. jeff armstrong, victim :04 "the security system itself is hardly an expense after you think about all that you could lose." for jeff, that might be a rare coin. consider what it would be for your family. connor ingalls, nbc 10, your local news leader.
