time for tonight's big game...the utica comets are coming off a four-game losing streak. tonight they look to stop the bleeding as they take on north division rival - binghamton devils as the playoff race keeps getting tighter. --- first period - comets on the power play - zach macewen up to reid boucher - across to philip holm for the one- timer. scores! first game back from injury - holm gets the comets on the board...1-0 --- in the second - same score. devils now on the attack. far boards - kevin rooney up to the point josh jacobs rips the slapshot that changes direction and winds up fooling thatcher demko going top shelf to tie the game. that's the first a- h-l goal for jacobs. --- later in the period - bingo looking to take its first lead of the game. at the crease it's austin cangelosi - back door - john quenneville but demko gets a shoulder on it and tips it over the net. great stop side-to- side for the comets goalie. --- so to the third we go tied at one. cole cassels sparring with a devils defender as they skate into the binghamton zone. jumping in to grab the loose puck is brendan woods who fires the quick shot that hits the back of the net... ...comets get out of the woods as the man with local ties gets the game-winner. utica with a big win 2-1. hello everyone and welcome to sports express. flying solo here in the studio tonight - we will hear from alicia a little bit later in the show. a big win tonight for the comets indeed - but plenty of other action locally tonight. let's hit the hardwood for some boys hoops. v-v-s high school. the red devils hosting the c-v-a thunder in a t-v-l pioneer league matchup tonight. --- going to the fourth quarter with v-v-s on top. a quick strike from the devils. nate palmer picks it up - dishes down low to jacob horodnick who drives baseline and then puts it up off- balance and gets it to go. 56-27 v-v-s. --- back the other way - central valley trying to hang in there. lucas kleban at the top of the key - sees nothing so takes it himself from beyond the arc and hits. three pointer thunder and they trail 56-32. --- red devils passing on point tonight. working it to the paint - it's a game of hot potato until bailey janowski puts it in. it's a 23-point game. --- not done there - this time inside out it goes where bryce cousin lets it fly for three and he sinks it... ...vernon-verona-sherrill clicking tonight - they get their first win in league play. final 64-41 in another t-v-l pioneer matchup tonight - the camden blue devils pay a visit to the oneida indians in a rivalry matchup. --- third quarter of this one - camden down trying to claw back. oneida with the half-court press on but good passing by the blue devils gets them through as carter steria gets it under the hoop and puts it in. camden trails by 21. --- still looking to chip into the deficit - calex parker working it in the paint - he gets through the defense and floats it home. 53-31 the score. --- oneida's offense cruising all game long - continuing in the second half. around the arc it goes - inside to john jones who banks it in. getting tripped up along the way. he'd finish in double digits with ten points. --- then dishing and swishing is oneida yet again. no look pass from vincent leibl to scott potter underneath and that one's good... ...oneida improves to 2-2 overall and ends the night atop the pioneer division as they win it 75-41. that'll take us to first intermission here on sports express. coming up next - and what an important win it was. this week the comets were looking at three divisional games in four days - with one still left on the horizon. the game on wendesday against the rochester americans didn't go their way as they lost 3-1 but they bounced back tonight with a 2-1 win. that brought the comets back into the fourth and final playoff spot to end tonight. the standings are extremely tight with the comets tied with laval for the fourth spot - but with a game at hand. that allows them to creep into a playoff spot for the moment - but the team still knows that they need to win these divisional matchups for them to put themselves into a comfortable position. wacey hamilton: ...they're all divisional games this week and we need these points. patrick wiercioch: ...not rely so heavily on our goalies to make that extra save. cam darcy: ...it's a grind, we just need to find ways to finish games. the comets certainly did that tonight - with a third period goal giving them the win against the devils. they finish up this big divisional week with a rematch against rochester at home tomorrow at seven. coming up tomorrow - we'll have more from lake placid as erin hamlin competes at her home track for possibly the last time. alicia will have a report from the luge world cup as the women's singles begin at 9:30 a-m. --- also -
