easy for brandon woodruff. after being drafted in the fifth round by the texas rangers out of high school, woodruff chose to play at mississippi state instead, and he says he would make the same choice again."woodruff: "it was something that was very important to me, i wanted to go to college and get that education, and if anything ever happened, you know, i would always have my education under the books. you know, i didn't have a great career at mississippi state, but i loved my time there, and i think by going there, i learned to grow up and be a man, and i think that's helped get me where i am today."jim: "after his junior year, woodruff was drafted by milwaukee, and he was off to the minors, including a stint in biloxi, where things began to turn around."woodruff: "playing in biloxi and being down there was, a lot of state fans, a lot of family got to come down, so it was great, and my wife got to come down when she wasn't working, so it was great just to have all that support, and my family being able to come to a lot of games."jim: "but it was also during this time in biloxi when woodruff's brother, blake, died following an atv accident. in his first start afterward, woodruff threw six shutout innings, and hit a solo home run."woodruff: "going through that time last year, in 2016, with the passing of my brother, it was a hard time, but i had the family there that supported me and got me threw it, and definitely, i can't thank them enough."jim: "woodruff would be promoted to the big leagues in june of 2017, but he would face adversity once again, as he was injured shortly before his first start."woodruff: "i'm going through my normal routine, and all of a sudden, snap, i pulled my hamstring, and i'm sitting here thinking to myself, it's like, there's no way this just happened."jim: "but woodruff would get another shot less than two months later."woodruff: "th first two innings, i got out of two bases loaded jams, and i told the pitching coach, i said, look, i can only get better from here, you know, i've worked out of two jams, and that was a night i'll never forget, and it just turned out to be a 2-1 ball game, and it was very special."jim: "woodruff hopes 2018 will get better as well. there's been talk of a regular spot in milwaukee's starting rotation."woodruff : "it's looking that way, and i don't like to, you know, put the cart before the horse, but i'm just gonna keep working hard, and keep getting ready for spring training, and go in and pitch like i know how, and you know, things will work out."jim: "reporting
