Dec. 30, 2017 Sun, 31 Dec 2017 04:17:37 +0000 WTVA Saturday night sportscast Dec. 30, 2017 WTVA ABC Tupelo, MS was game day in jacksonville.... mississippi state took on louisville in the taxslayer bowl.... both teams entered the game with 8-4 records.... keytaon thompson getting ready for his first start.... first drive, thompson hands off to west point'saeris williams.... good call....5-yard td run for the a-train....7-0, msu.... williams finished with 88 rushing yards on 12 carries.... after a louisville td, msu responds....thompson does it himself this time....14-yard td run....bulldogs up, 14-7, after one quarter.... cardinals come back....lamar jackson with a 13-yard td run....14-14.... jackson had a big day running, but not his best passing day....later on, jackson picked off by mark mclaurin, who returns it deep into louisville territory.... it set up ajace christmanfield goal....msu up, 17-14.... jackson would answer through the air, though....finding jaylen smith for a 11-yard up, 2 1-17, at halftime.... third quarter, it's 24-17 when jackson is picked off by mclaurin again.... this play would set up this play....a short thompson td tied at 24.... after a field goal gives louisville the lead back....thompson scores on another short run....msu now up, 31-27.... under three minutes to go....jackson trying to lead a comeback....instead, he's picked off by mclaurin for the third time in the game....msu would run some time off the clock.... but jackson would get one more chance....throwi ng up a hail mary....instead, it's hail state....jonathan abram bats it away.... mississippi state defeats louisville, 31-27, to win the taxslayer bowl.... wtva sports director jim holder was at the game and has this recap... jim: "mississippi state wins the taxslayer bowl under interim head coach greg knox, also with a true freshman quarterback, keytaon thompson, who had a huge day, and they had a huge day from mark mclaurin. three interceptions off lamar jackson, and he was the game's mvp." mark mclaurin: "just the coaching and the play calls, the d line, i'm thankful for the d line and linebackers, coach english and the dbs, just great play calling, we just all did our job, and made plays on defense." greg knox: "we talked about going out and playing four quarters, and it took four quarters to win that ball game, we knew what we were facing, heisman trophy winner, a guy that was capable of putting the team on his back and carrying them to victory, but our defense, we talked about playing to our identity, fast, physical, tough. we were able to run the ball. our quarterback, i take my hat off to him. a young freshman stepped in for his first start. he was phenomenal. he was phenomenal. we talked to him about managing the game. i thought he did a great job of that." keytaon thompson: "coach elliott and coach knox, you know, trusted me, coach knox trusted coach elliott, coach elliott trusted me, and it came down the chain, and we were just able to make some plays." jim: "the bulldogs finish the season with a 9-4 mark, and the future is certainly bright. we will talk more about that on sunday evening. reporting from jacksonville, jim holder, wtva 9 sports.' thank you jim! what a way for the bulldogs to cap off a wild 2017..... there are three other bowl games on the schedule today.... iowa state and memphis met at the liberty bowl.... first appearance for the tigers in liberty early 3rd quarter.....memph is down 14-10.... riley ferguson rolls right and hits phil mayhue.... mayhue almost looks like he's in slow motion, but no one can bring him down.... he scores and memphis takes a 17-14 lead.... late in the 3rd quarter... cyclones in the red zone.... kyle kempt's pass is caught by allen lazard.... iowa state takes a 21-17 lead, and the cyclones hold on for a 21- 20 victory... memphis finishes the season 10-3.... other scores from today.... penn state defeats washington 35-28 at the fiesta bowl... wisconsin leads miami 34-24 at the orange bowl.... there have been lots of holiday high school basketball tournaments this week.... icc hosted the 4th annual rumble by the river.... 5 games on the schedule..... amory and sulligent, alabamaled things off.... late 4th devils down 2.... tyreke metcalfe misses the 3, but hayden nolen is there for the rebound and put-back.... sulligent forces overtime.... back and forth they go in the extra period.... kevin sullivan hits a tough shot to give sulligent a one point lead..... back come the panthers.... trayshon hadley misses, but isaiah thompson is there for the stick-back.... amory downs sulligent 79-74 in overtime.... tj wallace led the panthers with 28 points..... next up was itawamba ahs and okolona.... first quarter....indians on the run..... jaxon orr misses at the rim, but the loose ball is kicked back to trey nanney.... nanney lives up to his name and knocks down the trey..... forget best team in 1a, okolona could be the best team in northeast mississippi.... and this is why.... ladarrius spears finishes the ally-oop.... this is not a replay.... next okolona possession, it's spears with another ally- oop.... okolona wins 79-40 jaylon bailey led okolonawith 20 points.... columbus highmade it to the championship game at the arby's classic in bristol, tennessee.... the falcons took on north mecklenburg high out of north carolina..... that's denijay harris taking it all the way to the rack for 2.... later in the first quarter.... harris feeds robert woodard down low.... basket....and the foul for big bob close game, but north mecklenburg pulls away late for a 62-53 win.... the mississippi state men wrapped up non-conference play this afternoon at the hump..... the bulldogs downed north florida 109-81 aric holman scored a career high 23 points... there's a look at sports, we're back after this.... mother
