The Locker Room: Previewing Boys Basketball Semi-State Sat, 17 Mar 2018 02:29:17 +0000 The Locker Room: Previewing Boys Basketball Semi-State The Locker Room: Previewing Boys Basketball Semi-State WFFT hey good evening and welcome inside the locker room...i am justin prince alongside my partner in crime petar hood... petar... week number two with no high school basketball highlights... but don't think we don't have you covered for what's coming this weekend... yeah that's right justin... all basketball eyes from northeast indiana will be focused on huntington north this weekend...the pit set to host two semi state games tomorrow in class 1a and 2a... in 1a... it's a battle of top three schools in the state as blackhawk christian and southwood meet up for a chance to head to bankers life...the braves have been one of the best in the state all year long.. and they look to prove it saturday. you could make the argument that blackhawk christian has been one of the best... if not the best team in class 1a all year long...the braves haven't lost a game they've played against opponents in their same class... and are 26 and two on the season with both losses coming against 4a opponents...marc davidson, blackhawk christian basketball head coach: "we've talked to the kids from day one about the process. and for us, that's been motivation throughout the year, just to get better every day. these guys have really worked hard in practice, and i think sometimes when you have a talented group, you don't always see the effort. and we got a group that works extremely hard, and i think that's why they're enjoying the success they are." blackhawk has a lot of things to thank for their success... one can be traced to their size... the braves' roster features three players 6'8" and taller including freshman caleb furst who has burst on to the scene this year, averaging 14 points and seven boards per game...caleb furst, blackhawk christian fr. forward: "i just feel like i've become more poised as the season's gone on. i haven't rushed or hurried nearly as much and i've just been patient with it, but at the same time, playing fast."one other piece to their puzzle has been the play of senior jalan mull...m. davidson: "i think the best thing you can say about a basketball player is they make their teammates better. jalan is phenomenal at making his teammates better, and he's just continued to do that all year with his passing ability and he is so unselfish, he would rather get an assist than a basket, and when you have that mentality from your best player, i think it just trickles down."now... all of that has culminated in the braves making their first semi state appearance since they made three straight trips from 2003 to 2005... blackhawk's lone semi state title came in the '04 season... and just because they haven't been here before doesn't mean this group is fazed one bit... jalan mull, blackhawk christian sr. guard: "we're extremely excited. we've been working for this all year, and i think we're prepared and ready for this weekend."drake thompson, blackhawk christian sr. forward: "i really don't think anyone's nervous, i feel like we're more just ready to play and more just anxious about playing the game, not really anxious about the game itself."m. davidson: "for our kids, they've had a little bit of a magnifying glass the entire season, and kind of a target on them, and so i think playing with those expectations has kind of gotten them used to being on a stage so to speak. and we've had some big time games this year against some pretty big time programs, and i think all those things help to prepare us for a game like saturday." they'll face a good southwood team who is ranked third in the state, and has won 24 of their last 25 games, including 16 straight...frank davidson, blackhawk christian jr. guard: "they're a good team, they're gonna try to push up, get points in transition, but i think we can stop them in transition and it'll be tough to beat us."m. davidson: "they're a very explosive offensive team, so defensively we're gonna have to be really good, we gotta find their shooters, we're gonna have to really rebound the basketball, and offensively their press has been pretty good and pretty effective a lot of teams, and so we're gonna definitely have to take care of the basketball."but the braves have rolled through sectional and regional play, averaging 88 points per game and outscoring teams by 46... and with a state championship berth on the horizon don't expect any big changes from the braves now...mull: "we just gotta keep on doing what we've been doing. playing defense, i think that's key, keep on locking up and i think we'll be okay."m. davidson: "i think our kids are at a point where we're playing our best basketball of the year. we'll talk about southwood all week, but our main focus is on us and carrying out our gameplan and playing the way we have been playing. and, so, we expect our kids to play well." so at the end of the day, blackhawk is right where we expected them to be at the end of the season, petar..that is, of course, in contention for a state is southwood, honestly..they were expected to be one of the best teams in the state coming into the year..and they have lived up to the you mentioned in your story, 24-3.. they're on a 16-game win streak..and they're beating their postseason opponents by an average of 39 points per game.. all with their head coach john burrus leading the way..and for burrus, the journey to get to this point, has been filled with many peaks and valleys.. just in the last year, burrus has undergone quintuple bypass surgery, and endured the loss of his beloved brother, paul.. despite his peronal setbacks, burrus continued to coach, continued to win, and now, here he is.. one game away from taking his team to bankers life fieldhouse.. john burrus: well these guys have been a real blessing to me. i mean, when you go through the heart surgery that i had.. five bypass.. lost my brother, who passed away in november. you know we've had a lot of things to deal with in our family personally, but this basketball team has really helped me to kind of get back on my feet."peyton trexler: "it means the world to us. i know it means the world to him. he went through that, and even though he and his family went through that, we went through that too. this is a family thing. he's always said this whole year that he's thankful for us that he hasn't had to put much pressure on the heart."narr: coach burrus says he is thankful for this group.. and maybe, in particular, this senior class.. the winningest class in program history.. 78, and counting.. and now playing in semi-state for the first time since 2010.. as fourth graders, peytron trexler and carson blair looked up to that team.. now they're trying to do something even they couldn't..trexler: "back then that was the dream.. and now that it's come to reality, it's wonderful.."question: "what would it mean to be able to take southwood to bankers life fieldhosue?"blair: "oh it would mean everything.. you know, as long as the school has been together, no team has ever went to state. that would be huge for us to be the first ones, so i hope we can do it." trexler: "to me personally, it would be everything we worked for these past four years and before that, too. and to get it with my best friends, my brothers, and for coach, and our families in the community, it would be a dream come narr: and it would be a cool story, too.. problem that stands in the way of that dream may be in the conversation for best 1-a time in this state..and the knights know winning tomorrow task.. pun intended.. burrus: "i think thier size.. the size of their kids down low, the quickness of the guards, especially their point guard. he's quick, and i think he does a great job of handling their team. i think they kind of go as he goes." blair: "you know they've got three kids 6'8", 6'10", around there.. so we gotta block out, get rebounds. if we don't get rebounds they could kill us, so we have to work on that and focus on rebounding."trexler: "their size, obviously.. they have a size advantage.. but i think our speed, our teamwork, and our brotherhood is what is going to get the job done on saturday."narr: and southwood expects to win tomorrow, even though not many think they can.. they kind of like it that way..blair: "yeah, you do like that. you want to reach up, knock people off, so people are looking down.. we're the underdogs.. that's fine. we're just going to go out and play our game and hopefully we can get a win." 3
