http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12451/7384627?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Tue, 10 Jul 2018 21:22:05 +0000 Coach's Corner: Paul Carroll, Howard Huskies Bill Shanks sits down with the new head coach of the Howard Huskies, Paul Carroll. http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12451/7384627?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WMGT talking to c1 3 b15 in bibb county with paul carroll at howard. all right, you're taking over for barney hester. let's talk about that first. i know he was only there for five years, talk about that first. i know he was only there for five years, but he's a legend in this town. you coached with him last year. paul: right. bill shanks: does that makes it easier for you to take over that job? paul: i tell you, that's one of the questions everybody asks me. and the biggest thing's i tell them this, i've got some big shoes to fill. bill shanks: yeah. paul: and for the past couple of years, i've been just going around different shoe departments and trying to find the shoes that fit me. bill shanks: yeah. paul: there's gonna be some different things here and there, but coach hester has done a great job with the program and we've got a little momentum going as of you know, making the playoffs last year for the first time. bill shanks: mm-hmm . paul: so really excited about this upcoming year. bill shanks: that's kind of perfect timing because he's been there five years, he's taken the program from where he inherited it to when he left and got to the playoffs and now someone who was there to see that last year can take over. i mean that's about as natural as a transition as you want to have. is- paul: right. it is. it is. like i said, it's a great opportunity. and the kids are all fired up. and the biggest thing is is about work. and our kids are working real hard in the off season and working hard in the weight room. bill shanks: can you tell there's a comfort level with you just taking over the program and being there last year? paul: there is. there is. the guys, you know, the biggest thing is is really with the comfort level is being able to notice what they're doing in the summertime. bill shanks: mm-hmm . paul: the kids have been showing up. we've probably been averaging about 70 to 80 kids in the weight room, which is good. bill shanks: real good. real good. all right, first-time head coach. you've been an assistant for many years. paul: yes. bill shanks: so what does this mean for you? i mean this is a big job to have a head coaching job paul: yeah, it is. you know, it's always been my goal as a coach. starting out in 1997 at tifton. you know, i thought i was gonna be able to get a head job a little bit earlier, but you know, it's all about paying your dues. and i've worked with several good coaches and i've taken piece by piece by piece from each coach and just kind of implement it into my coaching style and hopefully everything works out. you know, the biggest thing is just hard work. bill shanks: is there one coach you worked for that you learned a lot from that was kind of your mentor? paul: well, i've got several you know. dwight jones was one of them who was at jones county. bill shanks: yeah. paul: coach way who was over at warner- robbins. bill shanks: sure. paul: and coach hester. ed pilcher who was at thomas county. bill shanks: wow. paul: and charlie winslett who was at tiff county. bill shanks: oh, wow. big names. paul: so, you know, i worked under some good guys. some head football coaches that were very successful. and just taking some pieces here and there, like i said, from them and just seeing if it's gonna work. bill shanks: absolutely. that's some good coaches to learn from for sure. we'll talk about what the howard huskies will have coming up this year in
