http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12451/7385137?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Wed, 11 Jul 2018 21:22:14 +0000 Coach's Corner: Joaquin Sample, Central Chargers It's a new era for the Central Chargers, as former coach Larry Harold has now given way to brand new head coach Joaquin Sample http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12451/7385137?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WMGT appointments available now. c1 3 b15 coach of the chargers, who is alumni. you've been there as a coach for several years, but this is where you played. what does it mean for you to have this head coaching job and for us to identify you as the new head coach of central? joaquin sample: it's a blessing and an honor to be the head coach and being an alumni. i had a lot of teammates that helped me get to this point. i had a lot of good coaches when i was at central. tom simonton, ron little, they were very influential and they kind of helped me push into this profession, so it's a blessing and an honor to be the head coach of my alma mater. bill shanks: you were there when coach simonton has some pretty good there in the mid-'90s, right? with tony gilbert and the gang? joaquin sample: yes sir. we were the only team to beat warner robins in '98 here in the city of macon. we won the regional championship in '96, so we went to the playoffs back-to-back in my junior and senior year. we sent coach simonton out on a good note because he retired year of my senior year. bill shanks: absolutely. absolutely. all right. you've been an assistant for several years at central, working with coach hicks, who of course, you worked with at baldwin before. then, you were with coach harold last year in his one year at central. now, three years, three head coaches, but you were kind of the constant. does that help out? joaquin sample: it does. it gives a trust factor to the kids, somebody who's been there, especially with my upper classmen who've seen ... this is their head coach in the last 15, 16 months. that's a real big thing and that's one of the reasons why i think i got the job. i think the administration trust me. i think the kids trust me. i hope the parents trust me. i hope the community trusts me as well. bill shanks: stability's important and when you have a situation where there are three head coaches, you want some stability and that's just very crucial, isn't it? for the kids' sake. joaquin sample: it is. kids need constant reaffirmment of what the process is and when the process changes as much as it has, it can cause cracks in the system. we're trying to rebuild those tracks. one of our mottos is, 'one heartbeat.' we want the whole program on one heartbeat and having that process in place and i'm not going anywhere for a long, long time because this is my dream job. bill shanks: that's great. that's great. all right. the chargers were 2-7 last year. can they be better in 2018? we'll ask coach sample that question in our next report.
